Auditions for Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the Murder

In 1787, the year of the writing of the Constitution, Thomas Jefferson penned the words, “I may challenge the whole orations of Demosthenes and Cicero to produce a single passage superior to the speech of Logan, a Mingo chief.” Yet the massacres and war that sparked Logan’s words—words which were memorized by American schoolchildren for over a hundred years—have all but been forgotten by modern Americans. Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the Murder is an original play featuring eyewitness testimonies of the gruesome murder of Chief Logan’s family and his subsequent revenge taken almost verbatim from records compiled by Thomas Jefferson.

The story is packed with grief, anguish, depression, and rage. Played by three actors convey a multiplicity of characters, it provides meaty roles for actors to sink their teeth into. “Something Eternal: Thornton Wilder On Time, Death, and Faith”

Our first out of state event, Bread & Wine Theatre Company is ecstatic to co-sponsor the C. S. Lewis Study Center’s 2026 Summer Conference. The conference features speeches from world-class Thornton Wilder scholar Lincoln Konkle (PhD), C. S. Lewis Study Center VP for Academic Initiatives Scott Key (PhD), and Bread & Wine Theatre Company’s own Owen Brown (MA).

One theme that courses through the significant literary contributions of Thornton Wilder is his exploration of time and eternity. The sponsors of this mini conference invite you to explore, to ask questions along with Wilder, and ponder the implications of the questions that linger at the edges of his plays. We will examine two of Wilder’s one-act plays and ponder the implications of the clues that he leaves along the journey. Within the schedule, time will be given to discuss, to ponder, and to wonder.
